It’s a question I get asked all the time; “What do you do for work?”
And when I casually respond with, “Oh I’m the Head of Happiness for a construction company,” I’m often met with laughter and even more questions; “What is that?”, “Is that even a real job?”, “I thought it was a joke!”
But soon after explaining the job role, comes either one of two responses; “Wow, I wish that was my job!” Or “Cor, we need you at our place!”
Because, actually enjoying your job and being in a workplace that prioritises mental health, wellbeing and happiness, seems to surprise a lot of people. But here’s the thing – at Bespoke Construction Group, we strive for that to be the norm. No ticking boxes, no making do.
Being the Head of Happiness means I continuously aim to meet the needs of our people and to ensure they feel a sense of belonging, fulfilment, and ultimately, happiness in the workplace and beyond.
People matter. And while prioritising workplace wellbeing and happiness is fundamental to the productivity and success of a company, aside from that is the simple fact that with or without business, everybody deserves to feel valued for being themselves and everybody deserves to be happy. The workplace is the perfect platform to encourage this and at Bespoke, we strive to do just that.
Stuart’s profound awareness and understanding of mental health and wellbeing and his desire to ensure the people around him are supported and happy, ultimately led to my recruitment as Head of Happiness and I haven’t looked back.
Being the Head of Happiness isn’t about trying to make everybody happy all of the time. It’s about having the ability to prioritise and facilitate happiness and positive mental health and wellbeing where possible, while also ensuring that on the days that don’t feel so happy (because, let’s be honest, they happen) our people feel seen and heard and know that support is available.
Having struggled with mental health personally for a significant part of my life, I feel proud and so lucky to hold this role and to work for a company which supports and encourages the happiness, wellbeing, and growth of its people.
It’s okay if you find my job title funny because, after all, life feels better when you’re laughing…so you can have this one on me!
