Tips For Getting Your Home Ready For Christmas

In this blog...

It’s finally December! Which means, whether you care to admit it or not, it’s time to celebrate Christmas. While many of us view this time of year as the most magical, it’s no secret that Christmas (and the run-up to it) can be a stressful time.

Households can become particularly hectic during the festive season. Yes, we want to get in the Christmas spirit and enjoy all of those festive things like decorating the home, baking festive treats, erecting the tree and so on, but we also want to keep sane and not overwork ourselves getting the house in order and ready for Christmas.

To help, we’ve broken down what needs to be done to get your home Christmas-ready and put it into this quick and easy-to-read guide. You could call it your home checklist for Christmas.

Declutter and Organise Before the Festivities

For this first tip, we’re going to be a bit strict and tell you to clean up your home. Throughout the year, our homes can accumulate so much stuff that by the end of the year, the available floor space has all but halved.

So, this step is vital. After you’ve decluttered where you can, it’s time to organise. Remember, traditionally, Christmas is unlike any other time of the year; it’s quite an active holiday, especially socially – friends and family will come to visit, and you may even be hosting a party or small get-together. So the last thing you want you and your guests to feel is cramped and boxed in like sardines.

Creating enough space in your home for you and the family to enjoy all the events and activities Christmas has to offer, as well as making an environment fit for entertaining, is a top priority that you will be thankful for during those 12 days.

Decorate Your Way

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to go overboard with the Christmas decorations. If that’s what you like to do, then you get stuck in, but it’s important to know that decorating isn’t for everyone, so don’t feel like you have to cover your home, top-to-bottom, in lights or engage in the fun activity of retrieving box after box from the loft. You can decorate as much or as little as you like.

That being said, those who aren’t fans of Christmas decorating can feel guilty about not engaging in the merry tradition. This doesn’t mean you have to give in and fetch that box of last year’s decorations; all it means is that you could find a different way to show your Christmas spirit in your home.

A popular grudge is that Christmas decorations are a waste of time and money, so why not go the more subtle and practical route? For example, in the place of tinsel and lights, introduce the Christmas colours of red, green and white with a new rug for the living room, or a towel of each colour for the kitchen and bathroom. Also, experiment with winter designs that could be seen as Christmassy but also acceptable to be seen all year round. In short, get creative with it.

Make Space so You Can Stock Up on the Essentials

The kitchen is a massively important part of the home at Christmas. Every year, we all look forward to the famous festive roast dinner, so it’s a good idea to have your kitchen ready and in tip-top shape, and if you take our advice in the first heading of this blog, it will be!

Having space in the kitchen is vital – you’re going to need somewhere to stock all of those Christmas essentials: the huge turkey, one or two bottles of prosecco or wine, all the trimmings and a generous handful of festive treats.
